Code Enforcement Corner -- Mount Airy Police Department -- MD
Reminders from the Code Enforcement Specialist
Illegal Dumping is a threat to our environment!
Many of us take clean Open spaces and drinking water for granted. However, they are resources that need to be protected if we wish to have a continuous supply.
We need your help to protect our open spaces, water supply, and waterways. We would like to remind everyone that the illegal dumping of debris, waste, animal waste, oils and solvents and any other trash and materials is a crime.
Town Code 64-18 states:
§ 64-18Dumping solid waste on land of another or into another container or upon any public highway; penalty for violations.
A.
It shall be unlawful for any person to throw, dump or deposit any solid waste upon the land or property of another without written consent first having been obtained from the owner of the property.
B.
Violation of this section is declared to be a municipal infraction. The penalty for violation shall be a fine of $400 for each offense.
64-22Unlawful acts.
[Amended 11-2-1998 by Ord. No. 1998-8]
A.
Any person, firm or corporation who or which shall bring, carry or cause to be transported into the Town any manner of trash, debris, garbage, junk, refuse or similar matter and who shall leave or cause the same to be left within the limits of the Town shall be deemed to have committed a municipal infraction.
Reports of this illegal dumping have been on the rise. Recent events have impacted our Water Treatment Plant almost resulting in a shutdown.
We will be investigating and taking steps to prevent these events by utilizing all resources at our disposal.
So please:
IF you are engaged in illegal dumping stop immediately! You may find yourself on camera, resulting in charges with hefty fines.
IF you see illegal dumping, report it immediately to the Police Non-Emergency Dispatch number at 410-386-2860. Photos of tags, vehicles and people are our best evidence.
We must all work together to protect our waterways and assure that our Town will continue to have clean lands, safe drinking water and waterways.
Voluntary compliance is our goal, and your cooperation is essential.
