CHIEF OF POLICE
Town of Mount Airy
The Town of Mount Airy, Maryland, located in Carroll and Frederick Counties with a population of 9,867, is seeking a highly visible, full time Police Chief to lead the Town’s police force. The Chief of Police has overall responsibility for enforcing the law and administering the Department. The Chief of Police will be responsible for planning, budgeting, directing, supervising and coordinating the activities of the Town Police Department in the areas of law enforcement and crime prevention. This position assesses law enforcement needs and provides highly responsible and technical assistance to the Mayor, Town Administrator and Town Council. The Chief’s first priority is to protect and serve the citizens and businesses of the Town of Mount Airy.
Required Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent professional training in the fields of criminal justice administration, police science, public administration or related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible law enforcement command experience, with at least 5 years’ experience in a senior-level command position
- Evidence of continuing professional development and familiarity of law enforcement trends and requirements.
- Extensive knowledge of modern principles, practices and techniques of police administration, data driven and intelligence-based policing, organization and operations; criminal justice system; technical and management phases of law enforcement and crime prevention; local government organization and administration.
- Working knowledge and demonstrated ability in the areas of labor relations, budget preparation and resource management.
- Strong background in community relations, customer/citizen satisfaction and community service.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in the English language and in both oral and written format.
- Ability to plan, direct and coordinate all departmental operations.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergency situations.
- Must possess or be able to acquire a valid Maryland driver’s license.
The Town of Mount Airy offers a competitive benefits package with a salary range of $80,000 to $90,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
