[ARCHIVED] Scam Alert -- Driveway Repair and Sealing

Driveway scams

Scam Alert

Spring and summer bring out many different types of scam artists. One of the most common is the driveway repair and sealing scam. A self-designated contractor will come to your door or approach you in your yard with a deal you can’t refuse. They are doing work in your neighborhood and have left over materials. They will seal or re-pave your driveway for a greatly reduced costs. No need for a contract, just let them start the work and you can talk about cost later.

If this sounds too good to be true it is. They will spray your driveway with paint, or spread a little asphalt, or simply spray water on your driveway to make it appear sealed. Then they request an exorbitant amount of money. When you won’t pay, they can become aggressive.

Unfortunately, these people prey on many of our senior citizens. They trick or coerce them into paying hundreds of dollars for no or inferior work.

Do not fall victim to their scam. Take these steps:

* Always ask for a business license number and permit to solicit from the Town.

* Never have work done without a signed valid contract.

* If they say it must be done today, tell them no!

* Caution you senior parents to always check with you before signing anything or agreeing to have the work done.

* Finally, if you see these scam artists or fall victim to their scam, call the police. Try to get a vehicle tag, business name or card.

By reporting these types of activities to the Mount Airy Police Department via their non-emergency dispatch number at 410-386-2860 or calling 911, citizens can make their communities safer and more secure!
