Press Release from Mayor Patrick Rockinberg to Sterling Glen and Summit Ridge Residents

Due to recent and past occurrences of discolored water in the Sterling Glen neighborhood, as a result of hydrant use, the Town is immediately implementing a short and long term plan.

The short term plan is the immediate hydrant flushing below:

HYDRANT FLUSHING STERLING GLEN AND SUMMIT RIDGE

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2017 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The long term plan is a formally engineered flushing program that will replace the flushing schedule currently in place. We anticipate that it will take approximately two months to engineer a town wide plan. The results of which will greatly reduce the occurrences of discolored water. We will also explore additional proactive measures.

The scheduled flushing of the water system noted above won’t interrupt water service. However, customers may notice a temporary drop in water pressure or discolored water as sediment is being flushed from the water system. While most residents are more comfortable refraining from the use of water during this time for purposes of consumption and food preparation, the discoloration only affects the appearance of the water quality. No health hazards are associated with the discolored water from hydrant flushing.

Useful Tips During Hydrant Flushing:

· Avoid running tap water and using the washing machine or dishwasher while hydrants are being flushed.

· Once flushing is complete in your area, run the cold water in each of your faucets until the water is clear. This will allow the sediment to work its way through your pipes.

· Check for discolored water before using the washing machine or dishwasher. Wait until the water runs clear before doing laundry or running the dishwasher. NOTE: If your laundry becomes stained, refrain from putting your laundry in the dryer. Rewash clothes immediately using detergent and add a rust remover if necessary.

· If water pressure or volume seems low after flushing has been completed, check your faucet screens for trapped particles.
