SAVE Mount Airy Elementary School
Dear Mount Airy Neighbors,
We apologize for the late notice to some. We are requesting everyone take the Carroll County Public School survey https://www.carrollk12.org/boe/redistrictingfacilityutilization/Pages/default.aspx . The deadline is October 31st, 2017, so please take a few minutes and complete now. We, concerned parents and community leaders, also wanted to share some thoughts to consider prior to completing the survey.
As most of you know, The Carroll County Public School System has been considering options that include closing some schools in the county and re-districting. The Towns position has been to oppose closing our schools. Mount Airy had a long history of school overcrowding and only recently has seen relief with the addition of Parr's Elementary and the re-build of Mount Airy Middle School. The same homes that filled these schools will fill them again in the future, plus there is some modest growth on the horizon. When we exceed a critical capacity number, in our schools, no new projects will be allowed to move forward which impacts funding that we as a community send to Westminster. We also oppose any re-districting of those within our defined town borders. We are a defined community already split by county lines. It's important for us to remain a defined community. We have not been opposed to re-districting outside of town or into our local Mount Airy schools. It’s very important to keep our children and schools in town to facilitate access/make better use of public infrastructure for educational and other community activities. Schools are the center of a community, if they move/close a Mount Airy school it will erode participation in activities that keep our Mount Airy community unified and strong.
Warmest Regards,
Patrick Rockinberg-
Mayor Town of Mount Airy
